I signed up for a photography class in high school and haven't put my camera down since. I quickly learned that the camera was the perfect way for a then quiet, shy, introverted girl to express herself. I've always been an observer and a people watcher, so photography was a natural fit. I also learned that a camera was a sort of license into places and situations I might not otherwise have been able to go. I love that photography gives me the opportunity to be a part of, and forever hold onto, moments of beauty, grace, joy, victory and defeat.
Making a living doing what you love is the only way to go in my view. When I discovered that photojournalism would allow me to do just that, I jumped in. After earning a degree at The University of Kansas, I started my photojournalism career at The Kansas City Star. I worked there as a photographer and photo editor for eight years. I became a master at time management, meeting tight deadlines, thinking on my feet, and anticipating moments. I became just as comfortable on the sidelines of a football field as I was at a press conference. I gained valuable management experience and formed lifelong friendships. Four years ago I transferred my newspaper training and experience to my own company. I became my own boss pursuing opportunities as an independent photographer. I stay busy with a great mix of editorial, corporate and event work.
I believe experience is important, but just as important is personality. Through photography that shy, quiet girl has turned into a confident, outgoing professional. I am known for my organization and calm demeanor under any circumstances. I am friendly, creative, and easy to work with. I am skilled in all areas of photography from fast paced sports shooting to moody portraits done with studio lighting.
Through my work I strive to show a different perspective. An angle you didn't see, a moment you missed, colors more vibrant than you remember.... If you were not there, I want my pictures to make you feel like you were. With portraiture, I try to capture a person's personality and stay true to who they are. My favorite quote that sums up how I feel about photography and the work I do is below. I came across it on an introduction page of one of my favorite books, Stay This Moment, by National Geographic photographer Sam Abell.
"If one does not lie back & sum up
& say to the moment, this very moment,
stay you are so fair, what will be one's gain, dying?
No: stay this moment.
No one ever says that enough."
-from Virginia Woolf's diary, December 31st, 1932
